It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in 1C! We have been doing all kinds of Christmas learning, from shared reading with Grade 3s to our Christmas Around the World Adventures.
What fun we had with Miss Starostecki's classroom reading ouR Santa letters. They also read Christmas stories to us!
We wrote some "Techy Santa Letters". The students had some sentence starters and wrote part of the letters on their own. Their writing is coming along nicely.
Our Christmas Around the World trip has been amazing so far. Each day we board our Polar Express "magic train" with our suitcases and train tickets and take a ride to a new country. Upon arrival, students get their passport stamped and we go on a learning journey about that country. Each country has a story, information and sometimes a song or a video. We learn about the country's flag and some Christmas traditions, and we make a craft.
To begin our journey, we first wrote about Christmas traditions that we all have. This helps us compare our traditions with traditions around the world.
This week we visited Canada, England, Mexico and Sweden.
Canada's traditional craft was the candy cane.
The English tradition is the stocking.
The poinsettia comes from Mexico.
Miss Coleman's family is from Sweden.
She did a presentation for us about St. Lucia.
All the Grade One classes made texture trees. Each student had a triangle to decorate with a variety of textured materials. We put all the triangles together to create one big Christmas tree. Really neat!
We are doing a unit about gingerbread! We are basing all our work around these wonderful books by Jan Brett. Students are taking an in-depth look at the story elements: characters, setting, problem and solution, as well as beginning, middle and end. We wrote about what it would be like if you were a gingerbread girl or boy. Next week we will do some writing about how to catch a gingerbread man, and end the week with our gingerbread centres day and building gingerbread houses.
CONGRATULATIONS TO CHARLOTTE FOR BEING STUDENT OF THE WEEK!
