May 25th

We returned to our discussion about Devon this week and brainstormed all kinds of reasons why Devon is a great place for kids to live.  The students had the task of writing an opinion piece about why a kid would want to move to Devon.  They used a graphic organizer web and had to have four reasons why.

I modelled how to write the paragraph.  The blue writing are the sentence starters that the students had to include in their writing.  The pink indicates where the students needed to use their own ideas.  We practiced using the connecting words AND and BECAUSE and SO.

Students wrote a rough copy and then a good copy with a choice of a cover page.  I was so impressed with their printing - UNBELIEVABLE!  We had an opportunity to share our writing with other Grade 1 classes and with partners.

Rough Copy

We have been learning about the parts of a plant and we made these bright and beautiful models, which the kids labeled.

It has been everything plants in our classroom!!!
For some reason our classroom has the most perfect kind of light to grow plants because everything we planted has just taken off.  Our pansies popped flowers over and over almost as soon as we brought them back from the greenhouse.  Our tomato plants are just towering so tall and we were sooooo excited to find that many of them have tomatoes growing on them!!
We joined up with Mrs. Tewitz's Grade 4 class to plant some seeds - flowers, herbs, peas and beans - and all of those grew like crazy too!  We get together with the Grade 4s every few days to record our observations. The Grade Ones just love working with the big kids!

We visited our class tree to observe how it is doing in spring.  We found it interesting that this tree gets brownish-red leaves in the spring that will turn green in a month or so, then back to red in the fall.

Bike Day was a HUGE success in 1D!  Everyone was so excited to get on their bikes and go.  They were biking superstars!  I was so proud of everyone.  Some students were independent from the beginning and others needed a little help but by the end, every single student was biking all over the field on their own.

Having fun outside on the mini park!
We are so glad the weather is allowing us to get outside!
