January 31st

We started daily Making Words lessons.  Making Words is a program that combines phonics and spelling that allows students to explore letter-sound relationships, letter patterns and words.  Each activity is fast paced and hands on.  In each lesson, students use pre-selected letters to create 10 to 15 words, beginning with short words and continuing with long words.  The final word contains all the letters students have that day. Students make the words with their letter cards, then they take turns doing it on the whiteboard for the whole class.  They write each word in their Word Work notebooks.
Here is an example of how the lesson progresses:

We learned a fun new game this week that really gets the students reading those sight words at a quick pace.  It is called KABOOM!  All the Rainbow Words are on sticks in a jar.  Students pass the jar around the circle, take a stick out and read the word.  The goal is to read as many words as you can before someone pulls out the KABOOM stick.  When that happens, all the word sticks must go back into the jar and we start all over again.  The kids just love it and it gives them lots of reading practice.

Daily 5 is one of our favourite things and when it is on the schedule, the students get so excited.
They love the independence that it allows them to have.

This week we read a story by Jan Brett called The Snowy Nap. We did some work with parts of the story by creating an anchor chart and a flip book. During Working on Writing, students chose and drew their favourite scene from the hedgehog's window.  Then they wrote about it.

Silly snowmen at night!

This week Phys. Ed. was all about getting your heart rate up and being active everyday.  We took the Energize Oil Country pledge to be active at least 60 minutes everyday and we log it in our energizer logbook.  Each week that we complete 60 minutes of daily activity, we will be entered into a draw for some fabulous Edmonton Oiler Prizes.  Here is our pledge:

Having fun in Phys. Ed. doing some active wellness centres!

January 24th

After the deep freeze last week, when so many students couldn't get to school and we had to spend the whole week in the warm classroom, we were so glad to get outside and enjoy the beautiful warm winter temperatures this week! The students just loved skating each day and they all improved so much by the end of the week. On Thursday and Friday we were so grateful for the coaches and players from the Northern Alberta Extreme Hockey Academy who came out to help us be superstar skaters!

And on Friday we had a fantastic time outside all afternoon doing our Winter Carnival activities.  We made snowmen and snow worms (made the best of the snow that wasn't quite sticky enough!), built snow forts, painted in the snow, and had a snow obstacle course.

We made some beautiful water colour winter scenes where the students learned about perspective, background and foreground.

Over the last couple weeks we have been learning about odd and even numbers.  We read some great stories which allowed the students to easily understand which numbers are odd and which numbers are even, and why.  Students played some fun games that gave them practice with identifying odd and even numbers.

Our Social Studies learning has been focused on our group - 1C - and why we are a group.  Through small group "turn and talks" and whole class discussions, we came up with a short list of rules for our classroom.  We also had practices exercising our group decision making skills and decided upon a class mascot.  We created a flag to represent The 1C Tigers!

We had a great time in Science last week exploring the five senses by playing with Mr. Potato Heads!  We identified which body parts are connected to which of the five senses.

This week we read one of my favourite winter stories, Snowmen At Night.  This book lends itself wonderfully to an imaginative discussion about what you would do if you were a snowman at night.  Students completed a writing assignment which began with the sentence starter "If I was a snowman at night______".  I love how their writing just keeps getting better and better.  And the cute torn paper collage just makes the writing complete.

We did some beautiful textured snow art!
