November 25th

The students did a great job sharing about their family heritage and family recipe projects for Social Studies.  We tasted some food, looked at many pictures of food and flags, and learned a little bit about our classmates' ancestry.

This week for our Gruffalo book study, we created our own horizontal timeline of the story.  The students orally retold the story to me while I wrote what they said.  Then the students chose the parts of the story that they wanted to illustrate and we added it to the timeline. We also did a oral story retell with illustrations in our Gruffalo books. The students just love this story and they had so much enthusiasm for this project! More fun Gruffalo activities still to come next week.

This week during Word Work we learned some new ways to do our word sorts - a "buddy sort" where we worked with partners to test and check our sorts, and "sort and draw" where we sorted then drew the pictures and labeled them.

Jacob was chosen to read his book to the class.  Awesome job, Jacob! Your classmates loved your story.

We worked a lot this week with the colour wheel and had lots of exposure to mixing colours. The students had an Art lesson about creating different types of lines with oil pastels.  They then painted with water colours using only the primary and secondary colours.  They turned out beautifully!

We used our Chromebook skills in Google Drawings to create Colour Wheels.  We also learned about another part of the Daily 5 - Listen to Reading.  Students had the opportunity to explore and listen to Bookflix.  This will be added into our Daily 5 rotations after Christmas.

In Math, our concept this week was demonstrating our counting on skills and learning to show one / two more than a number and one / two less than a number.  We even showed more than one or two more / less - it got trickier!  Here are some great videos of some of the students demonstrating these concepts. Maybe your child is in one!

CONGRATULATIONS TO BENTLEIGH FOR BEING STUDENT OF THE WEEK!
