January 31st

Our focus book these last couple weeks has been Snowmen At Night - a fun book about snowmen who come alive at night and do silly things, only to go right back to normal when the sun comes up without humans knowing a thing. We wrote about what we would do if we were a snowman at night. Such fun ideas we had - from having cold choco to having a party to going sledding!  We created a torn paper picture to go with our writing and then we read our writing to our buddies.  Finally, we used chalk pastels to make some silly snowmen at night.

We continue to learn new words and practice them in fun ways!

We play a new game called KABOOM! almost every day.  We pass a jar around that has all our Rainbow Words on popsicle sticks.  Each child takes a stick and reads it.  If they can read it, they get to keep it.  If they can't, they put it back.  We go around the circle reading as many words as we can until.... KABOOM!  If a student pulls the stick that says kaboom on it, all the word sticks have to be returned to the jar. Not only does it get the kids reading their rainbow words but they just love it and want to play it over and over!

We had some messy fun writing our words in shaving cream!

As a culminating project for our Shapes unit, the students created these amazing shape robots.  They were able to choose whichever shapes they wanted and were free to use their imaginations to make whatever they wanted.  Afterwards, they wrote about their reasons for choosing the shapes they did and shared it with the class.

We have now moved onto review numbers to 20 before we begin addition and subtraction.  We have been really practicing hard at showing our numbers using 10 Frames and Base 10 Blocks.

We had such a fun time with our other Grade One friends at our Senses Day. We created a hand with all sorts of textures, played a "guess the touch" game, made some rubbings with cool textures, smelled all kinds of smells - good and bad - tasted some interesting things (unsweetened chocolate was NOT a favourite!),  made our names in Braille, and played a "guess the sound" listening game.

We did some extra exploring with magnifying glasses to see how they make some things bigger.  Students explored, discussed, and drew their observations.
