April 6th

The highlight of our week was definitely our trip to the Golden Greenhouse.  As always, Mr. Farrah and his staff taught the Grade Ones so much about growing plants.  We were excited to see all the machines and equipment that help all the plants at the greenhouse look so healthy.  Students toured the entire greenhouse, including the seed room and the big soil machine.  The students had lots of questions and were very keen on learning new things about plants.  The hands on portion was lots of fun - we got our hands dirty and planted a tomato plant and a pansy flower.  We will keep the plants in our classroom to care for them for a while, until the weather is better for them to be taken home and planted outside. What a great kick off to our Needs of Plants unit in Science!  Thank you to all the parents who joined us to help out.

We have been learning about our community of Devon by examining photos of places in our town and discussing.  The students came up with a list of places that they thought were the most important and told why they were important parts of our community.  We also examined a map of Devon and found the important places. The class began collaboration on a mural of the Town of Devon - through their eyes.  Can't wait to see the finished product next week!

Our mural is a blank slate!

Working hard together!

Our first poem in our poetry unit is a chant poem.  We wrote our chant about wishes.  We started by reading this beautiful book about wishes, called I Wish You More, which lead to a discussion about wishing when you blow a dandelion. Students wrote their wish on a sticky and attached it to our wishing chart.
They then expanded their wishes to create their 6-line chant poem.

In Math we have moved onto learning how to solve addition story problems in 3 steps:

We love to play math games in our classroom!  Here are some awesome videos of the students playing Addition Snap.  Just listen to all the math talk and excitement that is going on!

We are learning our doubles facts with fun games and raps!

CONGRATULATIONS TO LOGAN FOR BEING STUDENT OF THE WEEK!
