September 13th

This week our focus was on getting started on Animated Literacy.  Animated Literacy is a program that uses stories, songs and actions to teach the letter sounds. The actions for each letter help us remember each sound.  We also do a guided drawing.  The order that the letters are taught is not the same order as the alphabet.  They are taught in an order so that children can begin to spell small words right away, and thus, read those words. We cut out the words of a sentence and put them back together, and then read it with our reading finger.  The students get very excited to be able to read words so soon!

This week we learned:

Another main focus this week has been on our daily Special Student.  Each day one student is chosen to share their special bags.  The rest of the students get to interview the Special Student while I write a piece about the student using their answers in a guided writing activity.  We then have a word hunt, using mini fly swatters to swat the words we know.  The kids just LOVE this part!  And they are starting to recognize more and more words each day.  When we have found all the words we know, the students are challenged when I give them a challenge word to find.  The class draws a picture of the special student while I interview the Special Student for our class book.  This is a very valuable Language activity and the kids look forward to it each day.

We logged onto the Chromebooks for the first time.  It took awhile to learn how to type in our passwords and navigate around.  Students learned how to get into Google Classroom, where I will put many activities, websites and games for the students to do throughout the year.  Our Chromebook time will happen one to three times per week.
