October 31st

This week we took a break from our learning of number sense to focus on 2D shapes.  We learned all the basic ones - circle, square, triangle, rectangle - and also a few tricky ones like trapezoids and hexagons.  The students applied their knowledge to create a shape pizza!

We also practiced our patterning by making cool witch's legs, and we patterned with Smarties on the 40th Day of School (which happened to be on Halloween!)  The students are able to demonstrate an ABAB, AABB, and ABC pattern.

We continue to learn about what kinds of groups we belong to - our school, our family, our community, and other after school groups.

Students were introduced to the next component of
the Daily 5: Read to Someone
They got some good practice in while they read a mini version of Big Pumpkin to each other.

Our second Halloween themed focus book this month was called Room on the Broom.  This is another favourite of mine and I am sure it will soon be one of the students' favourites as well.  It provided another opportunity for us to use our reading rope.  Students can identify the setting, characters, problem and solution.

Some fun new Word Work activities were introduced this week to practice those Rainbow Words:  Boogie Boards and salt trays

Halloween centre fun:
