January 24th

After the deep freeze last week, when so many students couldn't get to school and we had to spend the whole week in the warm classroom, we were so glad to get outside and enjoy the beautiful warm winter temperatures this week! The students just loved skating each day and they all improved so much by the end of the week. On Thursday and Friday we were so grateful for the coaches and players from the Northern Alberta Extreme Hockey Academy who came out to help us be superstar skaters!

And on Friday we had a fantastic time outside all afternoon doing our Winter Carnival activities.  We made snowmen and snow worms (made the best of the snow that wasn't quite sticky enough!), built snow forts, painted in the snow, and had a snow obstacle course.

We made some beautiful water colour winter scenes where the students learned about perspective, background and foreground.

Over the last couple weeks we have been learning about odd and even numbers.  We read some great stories which allowed the students to easily understand which numbers are odd and which numbers are even, and why.  Students played some fun games that gave them practice with identifying odd and even numbers.

Our Social Studies learning has been focused on our group - 1C - and why we are a group.  Through small group "turn and talks" and whole class discussions, we came up with a short list of rules for our classroom.  We also had practices exercising our group decision making skills and decided upon a class mascot.  We created a flag to represent The 1C Tigers!

We had a great time in Science last week exploring the five senses by playing with Mr. Potato Heads!  We identified which body parts are connected to which of the five senses.

This week we read one of my favourite winter stories, Snowmen At Night.  This book lends itself wonderfully to an imaginative discussion about what you would do if you were a snowman at night.  Students completed a writing assignment which began with the sentence starter "If I was a snowman at night______".  I love how their writing just keeps getting better and better.  And the cute torn paper collage just makes the writing complete.

We did some beautiful textured snow art!

Fun Word Work activities this week!
