November 17th

We had a presenter from the Teacher's Pet organization her to teach us about some traditions of First Nations people.  We had the opportunity to make a dreamcatcher and play some Indigenous games.  Lots of learning and fun on this morning, covering some of our Social Studies outcomes! Thank you to Logan's mom, Jacob's mom and Dee's mom for coming out to help us.

In Math this week the focus was ordering numbers and number lines.  We practiced putting numbers in order by physically holding a number and creating a human number line.  Key concepts were identifying numbers that are one more / one less, two more / two less. The students worked hands-on with different types of number lines.

Students played Number Face Off and used their number line knowledge to determine which number was greater.

In Language Arts this week our word family focus were the 'an' and 'ad' families.  Through Making Words, Word Sort and a variety of phonics activities, student had practice reading words from these families.  We did a cool new Word Work activity with our Rainbow Words - we made bendy words with pipe cleaners!  They had lots of fun with this.  Students took the pipe cleaners home so that they could practice making their word rings words some more. We also did another fun activity with our Rainbow Words - Hidden Words.  Students printed their words with a white crayon and then coloured over it with a marker - and the word magically appeared!  You can imagine how excited they were to do this.  Don't be surprised if your child starts to do this fun activity at home.

1D is getting better and better at Read to Self time! Many students are starting to move up a level and their books are getting more difficult.  After Read to Self, I have started choosing one student to read their book to the class.  I choose someone who has been a great role model during Read to Self.  On Friday I chose Taylor and what a ban-up job she did!  She read her book with a loud, clear voice and she kept the students interested and listening.
Excellent job, Taylor!

We are still doing our book study about The Gruffalo.  This week we focused on the characters of the story and sequencing the story.  We created a graph to show who our favourite characters were from the story.  We also started to create our interactive timeline  about the story - but we aren't finished yet so pictures of that will come next week. During Read to Someone, the students read a version of The Gruffalo in a mini book form.

In Science this week we learned about the primary colours and why they are important.  We learned that primary colours make secondary colours.  We did a super fun and messy activity with the book Mix It Up.  Students really got into the colour mixing, making all sorts of new colours.

We began sharing our Family Recipe Projects this week.  Dee had her turn and she did a great job presenting.  We learned that her family ancestors come from Canada and she shared her family recipe of Tomato Soup Cake with the class.  The students predicted that they would not like the taste of the cake because they thought it would taste like tomato soup.  But they were wrong!  It tasted like gingerbread and most of them loved it!  Thanks for making your cake, Dee, and sharing it with the class.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OLIVER FOR BEING STUDENT OF THE WEEK!
