June 16th

Our building day finally happened and, oh my, was it awesome!  We started our day by reading some great stories to inspire us to be engineers and designers.  We discussed and read about  different materials that we could use to build our dollhouses and which materials would be the best choice.  After that, the students were free to design and create their dollhouse with whichever materials they chose.  There was minimal guidance and everything was the student's idea - adults were simply there to supervise and help where needed with glue and fasteners.  The students worked so incredibly during this project.  The room was a quiet hum the entire 3 HOURS they worked.  It was so neat to watch the students problem solve when their design was not working, and help their fellow classmates with ideas.  The dollhouses turned out absolutely amazing.  I just couldn't believe some of the creativity and imagination that these kids had.

In Math, we have continued our work with measurement.  We had fun measuring the length of our classroom - it was 468 cubes long!

We had a Capacity Carnival where the students experienced a variety of centres that related to volume.  They filled up different containers - everything from bags, to pots to buckets to cups - with a variety of objects such as balls, water and beanbags.  The goal was to compare different sizes and shapes of containers, and see how much each on could hold.

We also explored measuring the weight of a variety of objects using a balance scale.  Students identified which objects weighed the most.

Good times at the Bike Rodeo!

CONGRATULATIONS TO CODY FOR BEING STUDENT OF THE WEEK!
